Memory in the Making Workshops
Honouring London’s queer performance spaces
Join us to create a unique pennant (a triangular banner you’d usually see as part of bunting) celebrating your memories of queer performance culture in London. Your piece will become part of a collaborative installation at the new London Museum opening in Smithfield later in 2026. Memory in the Making honours the queer spaces that shape our city and explores what performance, identity and power mean to you. Let’s celebrate the queer spaces and stories that we cherish.
Background information
Memory in the Making is created by artist E.M Parry alongside the museum’s Drag Advisory Panel. The pennants created during the workshops will be displayed in the new London Museum within a part of an area of the museum that will feature objects and stories responding to the contemporary life of London.
What to expect
With the support of our helpful team of artists and facilitators you will design and decorate your own textile pennant, sharing and making visible your response to the queer performance spaces and people that form part of London’s many stories. Don’t worry if you’ve never sewn before, no previous experience is necessary.
During the workshop you will also be invited to share a short written or spoken description of your pennant which will feature in a printed zine alongside a photograph of your pennant. This zine will also be part of the installation at the new London Museum.
The Piehouse bar will be open.
What to bring
You don’t have to prepare or bring anything to the workshop, we will have lots of fun materials there for you to use. If you would like to bring materials with you to include that would be great. You could bring an old flyer, a carabiner, badges, some material from an old costume.
For conservation reasons please do not bring items that contain wool, latex, real fur or feathers, ivory, horn or enamel. We are also not able to accept items that contain human tissue or blood products.
Accessibility
A care practitioner will be present.
We will provide blankets, stim toys, ear defenders and there will be a designated quiet table should you wish to not chat in making time.
We want to make sure that everyone is able to participate fully in this event. If you have any access requirements please let us know at daisy@the-hale.com so we can arrange the appropriate support.
