Discovering Kali is a vibrant and heartfelt queer documentary celebrating Club Kali — the world’s longest-running LGBTQ+ club night celebrating South Asian Heritage. Blending music, dance, and deeply personal stories, the film explores how this ground-breaking space has fostered community, creativity, and pride for over two decades.

Through intimate interviews and powerful archival footage, Discovering Kali shines a light on the queer South Asian experience — a story of visibility, resilience, and joy that continues to inspire new generations.

Directly after the screening please join the director and a panel of community voices as they discuss the film, the legacy of Club Kali, and the intersections of culture, queerness, and nightlife. And a small social in the main atrium of UCL east for some light refreshments.

‘Discovering Kali’ tells the story of Club Kali, the iconic club night that started in 1995 and continues to this day. Club Kali was the UK’s first safe space to welcome all LGBTQ+ South Asian and marginalised communities to dance, connect and celebrate their diverse heritages. It is now a global network that offers social events, workshops, and collaborations to support and celebrate its diverse community through music events, dance, and cultural expression.

Through the eyes and voices of its founders and members from all over the world, ‘Discovering Kali’ explores what Club Kali means – its importance and evolution on the LGBTQ+ scene, and beyond. The documentary takes us behind the legendary club, to hear about its impact on the lives of an intergenerational, inclusive LGBTQ+ community and the relationship to South Asian heritages. This is a story told through the lens of its pioneering founders, DJ Ritu MBE and Rita Hirani OBE, community members and partners over the years (who we are delighted are able to join us for the evening). ‘Discovering Kali’ documents the club’s 25 years of community, unity, education, and celebration of South Asian heritage.
