CLASS DESCRIPTION
From the Venus of Hohle Fels to the Seated Woman of Catal Hoyuk, the Snake Goddesses of Minoan Crete or the Venus of Lespugue, the Female Body in the Ancient World was celebrated in a myriad of forms, materials, cultures and aesthetics. Join our Feminist Lecture Program director Luisa-Maria MacCormack as we return to the beautiful world of Pre History for this special event where we will be learning about the fascinating stories of some of the most iconic figurines ever created.
We will be exploring the stories of prehistoric figurines of women from all over the world, from Africa, China, Japan, Europe, India and Mesoamerica, uncovering the surprisingly virulent theories and debates that rage about them, as well as forming our own theories about how they were created and why. Luisa will be exploring the sometimes misogynistic, often Eurocentric attitudes that have dominated Archaeological study of these iconic artefacts, as well as exploring the newest studies of figurines uncovered in recent years.
Learning about these palaeolithic and neolithic artefacts offers a direct and incredible insight into the world of all of our ancestors, allowing us a glimpse into how their world differed from our own, what inspired SO many cultures to create what are now loosely grouped as 'Venus' Figurines, and what we might learn from them today.
Throughout this session as well as Sunday's session, we will also be critically examining the infamous Great Goddess Hypothesis, with reference to works by Anthropology mavericks such as Maria Gimbutas and Robert Graves, exploring the arguments for and against a prehistoric mother-cult.
