This June, in collaboration with Folkestone Pride, we welcome you to Burrito Buoy for a surreal classic charting Tokyo's 1960s queer underground: Toshio Matsumoto's FUNERAL PARADE OF ROSES.
Eddie (Peter, the stage name of Shinnosuke Ikehata who later appeared in Akira Kurosawa's Ran) is a hostess and performer at Bar Genet who becomes embroiled in a violent love triangle with Leda, the bar's reigning madame, for the affection and attention of the bar's owner, Gonda. The bitter rivalry between Eddie and Leda, both personal and professional, crescendoes to a gruesome and violent finale.
Inspired by the French New Wave films of Jean-Luc Godard and in turn directly inspiring Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange, Matsumoto's work stands apart in how it centres the queer experience. Drawing directly from Oedipus Rex, this pop-art masterpiece blends melodrama, horror, comedy and documentary, underpinned by a soundtrack that swings from fuzzy guitars to Beethoven. Join us for one of Japan's most radical pieces of queer cinema.
