welcome to our first chosen family book club meet-up of the year!
this month, we’ll be reading Hijab Butch Blues, by Lamya H.
throughout the book, Lamya asks powerful questions about gender and sexuality, relationships, identity and faith, and what it means to build a life of their own.
Lamya writes about their move to the United States, coming out, and navigating the complexities of the immigration system – and the queer dating scene.
At each step, they turn to their faith to make sense of their life, weaving stories from the Quran together with their own experiences: Musa leading his people to freedom; Allah, who is neither male nor female; and Nuh, who built an ark.

chosen family book club exists because we’re tired of (well-meaning) white and straight people taking up space that we deserve too.
at this meet-up, anyone is welcome and the voices of our queer/trans+/disabled/BIPOC comrades will always be prioritised.
no two books will be the same, but they’ll always focus on themes like gender identity, race, palestine, disability, spirituality, and more.
this is a space where we hope you come as yourself and you leave with your people.
