About the fundraiser
Brazil’s Mostra do Filme Marginal (@mostradofilmemarginal) returns to London on 1st-5th of December, and we will host a pre-festival screening and Fundraiser on Wed 21st Oct. This pre-screening gives a sense of what's ahead, while supporting our current fundraiser. The curators behind the festival are based in Brazil, and we want them here in person - hosting sessions, leading discussions, sharing their work with us. So we’re raising funds for their travel costs, and would love your support!
There are pay-what-you-can and support tickets available. Alternatively you can get a free ticket and bring cash on the door. No one gets turned away for lack of funds.
Programme - Wed 21st Oct
Wednesday's programme brings together two documentary portraits from different parts of the world - one from northeastern Brazil, one from Japan. Both examine energy projects imposed on communities left to live with the consequences. A preview of what's to come at this year's Mostra, themed ‘Cinema and Environmental Emergency: Images of a Possible Future’.
Som das Serras (Highland Sounds)
Documentary, 9:41’ min, 2025. Directed by Eduarda Araújo
The film depicts two emblematic mountain ranges in the Seridó Potiguar region of Rio Grande do Norte: Sant'Ana and Formiga. While one already lives with the impacts of a major intervention, the other fears a similar fate. Through the voices of local communities, the short film reveals how an outside force has transformed the daily life of those who, long ago, chose the quiet of the mountains.
Retour à Fukushima
Documentary, 80’ min, 12+, 2025. Directed by Thomas Licata
For several years now, the Japanese government has been building complexes called ‘renewal housing estates’ in the heart of Fukushima Prefecture. More than a decade after the accident, this type of concrete neighbourhood is appearing in the still highly contaminated region, surrounded by wild and radioactive nature. This film provides an intimate portrait of the inhabitants of these places and gives a poetic reflection on the region.
See you in December!
This is just the opening chapter. The full Marginal Film Festival happens from 1st-5th December - sessions, discussions, and more films with the curators present in London. Your support on the 21st Oct helps make it happen.
