Jackie? … Jackie?
Biogal x TGirlsonFilm present a two day workshop that offers participants a communal space to encounter and discuss the work and cultural impact of the playwright, genderqueer drag queen, and poet Jackie Curtis (1947-1985), whose impressive body of work, like many trans* artists, is often upstaged by their role as muse to a more mainstream cis male ‘genius’.
Participants will explore a unique and multifaceted multimedia reading room. The room includes archival scans of hilariously annotated original scripts, rarely seen performance footage, and Biogal’s practice of live-art ‘bootlegging’, combined for the first time with Jaye Hudson’s transgressive film programming.
Building on four years of community event facilitation, the workshops will be rooted in collaboration and infused with open dialogue. The first session will begin by building a wider picture of Jackie’s life and legacy through reading auto-biographical poetry and screening interviews and performances. The second day will intersperse clips from Jackie’s 1970’s stage performances with a reading of their full original playscript of Glamour, Glory, Gold: the Life and Legend of Nola Noonan (1967).
Rooted in a practice of non-hierarchical learning, this is a space for discussing and experiencing experimental underground theatre, poetry, and film through the lens of genderqueerness and transfemininity. Instead of showcasing any singular closed interpretation of Jackie’s work, Biogal and Jaye Hudson are curious to find out what happens when Jackie is fully opened up to the public, and particularly the trans community.
This workshop is for community builders, artists, and activists interested in fostering community-based non-hierarchical alternatives for creative inspiration and learning. No previous experience is expected or required, merely a willingness to engage in open dialogue.
There is no need to bring any supplies or equipment.
