This month we welcome Ed Davies, a very successful author.

Author Ed Davies will share his story as a gay, nonbinary trans man, and discuss the present challenges facing trans people, particularly trans men in the UK.
Ed began his transition in Canada before moving to the UK in 2015. What started as a journey of self-actualisation has led him to the heart of a fragile political moment where the trans tipping point often feels like a cliff-edge behind us.
Trans hypervisibility has rapidly increased, linked to a culture war driven by those who aren’t affected by its outcome, and platforming many without personal experience or real expertise. Anti-trans rhetoric is now a recognised UK export—for example, discussed in the recent Council of Europe report on combating rising hate against LGBTI people.
What’s missing in most of these discussions is personal experience and real expertise. Even when experts are invoked, they usually forget to acknowledge that their expertise comes solely from what trans people have chosen to tell them, or, of that, what they’ve chosen to hear.
Trans people are often depicted as existing in unsatisfiable longing: gazing into the authentic, real, cis experience of gender from the outside, or perhaps attempting to mimic this experience from an outsider’s perspective, knowing deep down they’re never truly able to belong.
What if this were taken not as truth, but as just one possible story? And one that reveals, as most stories do, more about those telling it than its supposed main characters? Ed is looking forward to this chance to narrate on his own terms as well as exist in that story, reflecting on transmasculine existence, coexistence, desire, longing, and more.
Question time afterward will leave space for further discussion. Ed hopes that everyone attending will see themselves as a co-creator and notice what’s most prominent in their version of the story we tell together. The joy of writing is in turning a page and finding potential in the next blank chapter.
"My visibly trans body is not broken, mutilated, heartbreaking, or tragic. It’s resilient, defiant, strong, and joyful. And best of all, I don’t feel like I’m looking after someone else’s body anymore. So put aside your assumptions and let me tell my own story about myself.” -@thisboyisstrange
