Join artist Ashleigh Fisk at SET Lewisham for a day of workshops accompanying her solo show I Will Live Many Years In This Room. Drawing on Ashleigh's inspirations from historical practices we will explore Gall Ink Making in the morning and Locked-Letter making in the afternoon. Feel free to bring along any additional materials to personalise what we explore together.
Attendees are welcome to join either session, or come along to both for a full day of making. Both workshops are free and all materials are provided.
Oak Gall Ink Making Workshop
Saturday 16 March, 10am-12pm
Join artist Ashleigh Fisk for an in-person Gall Ink Making workshop to learn the process of making traditional archival ink from oak galls, using techniques employed in historical documents and medieval manuscripts before the use of artificial ink.
Oak galls are tannin-rich growths that form on oak trees and are caused by wasp larvae. During this two-hour workshop, participants will learn the alchemical process of transforming natural materials into a rich, durable ink, from sourcing and preparing the galls to the final blending process. Once the ink is ready, we will experiment with drawing, writing, painting, and mark-making using our handmade ink.
All materials will be provided but feel free to bring along any preferred writing, painting, or mark-making implements, as well as papers, to further explore the versatility of your ink. Each participant will leave with their own jar of oak gall ink!
Supported using public funding by Arts Council England.
