In this critical conversation, we will delve into how artists, writers, and creatives have used their individual and collective voices to share stories of alienation, belonging and resistance. This event will explore the deep connections between home, identity, language and the creative process, particularly when artists may have experienced being outcast, "othered," or displaced—both in their art and wider communities. Amidst rising global violence we will reflect on the role of art, literature and language in these turbulent times. What does creativity offer us in the face of such violence? What dangers threaten our expressions and identities? Why do we continue to create, even when it feels absurd or futile?
We will critically examine the racism, casteism and classism embedded in the writing and publishing world, asking how these systems of oppression silence and erase marginalised voices. Can art and writing survive and thrive as tools of resistance, or are they compromised by their very structures?
Join us as we reflect on the urgent role of storytelling in times of crisis, questioning not only how we create but why we must continue to do so.
The event will feature mixed-language discussions in English and Urdu, with translation available.
