Cultivating Community Activism: Learning from Cathy McCormack’s ‘The Wee Yellow Butterfly’
This summer sees the launch of a new freely-available audiobook of Cathy McCormack’s ‘The Wee Yellow Butterfly’.
Written with Marian Pallister and originally published in 2009, ‘The Wee Yellow Butterfly’ tells the story of Cathy’s life and community activism in Easterhouse, particularly campaigning against damp housing conditions in Council-owned schemes in the ’80s and ’90s.
At this free listening and discussion event we will hear from the people behind the audiobook project, alongside local community activists and Cathy’s friends and former collaborators, including: Carmen Robb (audiobook producer), Maria Latumahina (Training for Transformation), Ellie Harrison (Glasgow Community Energy / Get Glasgow Moving) and Keira McLean and Joey Simons (Living Rent Govanhill Branch).
Together we will explore how Cathy’s ability to make connections between social and environmental injustices, and her determination to fight for change remains as relevant today as ever. Discussing the ways in which Cathy’s thinking has inspired our own work, we will highlight the potential of ‘The Wee Yellow Butterfly’ as a tool for cultivating a new generation of community activists now.
Supported by Glasgow Community Energy.
*No age restriction. Accessible toilets, wheelchair access, various seating options, step-free access. Seated event.
