Imbolc Stitchcraft Workshop with Sheffield Feminist Archive
This Imbolc we're exploring knitting, crochet and textile work as part of our collective heritages, and how we can draw on this to re-forge our relationship to cloth and clothing and resist overconsumption. Julie and Rosa from Sheffield Feminist Archive will join us to discuss the history of knitting for them and in the feminist movement more broadly, its significance as skilled work, and the implications of this for radical politics and textile production. We'll have finished, part-finished and cast on swatches for you to pick up and finish, to take away and leave out overnight as Brat Bhríde, for the goddess Brigid to bless. You are welcome to bring a work-in-progress if you prefer.
If you're not a knitter or crocheter but want to attend, there'll be materials to embroider a finished swatch with!
What are Brat Bhríde?
Brat Bhríde are pieces of material which were left out overnight on the eve of St. Brigid's day (1st February) for the goddess to bless, and imbue with powers of healing and protection which lasted throughout the year, and which were then brought in by sunrise to be kept in the household. Brigid is an ancient goddess and Irish saint, with particular links to healing and midwifery.
