This free, three-hour session will take a person-centred approach to self-defence, rooted in empathy, lived experience, and trauma-informed practice. The class is designed to not only teach self-defence skills, but to help you explore the why behind them, so you can reconnect with your strength, your boundaries, and your sense of safety. Whether you’re a survivor, someone seeking confidence, or just want to feel more prepared, you’ll be met with compassion and support every step of the way.
The session is open to all trans, non-binary and intersex adults. In particular it is designed to be welcoming for people who usually face barriers to participation in physical activities, including people with disabilities, neurodivergent people, and older adults.
You’ll Learn:
- The laws around self-defence and reasonable force
Understand your rights and what the law says about protecting yourself. - Situational awareness and prevention
Become more alert and recognise risks. - De-Escalation using voice and hands
Learn how to defuse confrontations and set boundaries with confidence. - Striking and defensive skills
Use your body’s natural strengths with powerful strikes, kicks and blocks - Escape techniques
Gain confidence in releasing yourself from wrist and clothes grabs
The session is designed to be:
- Inclusive – Welcoming trans, non-binary and intersex folk of all backgrounds.
- Practical – Focused on real-life scenarios, not flashy fight techniques.
- Supportive – A space where you can learn, share, and grow without judgment.
- Empowering – Helping you build confidence, community, and strength.
About the instructor:

Hi, I’m Jai, founder and instructor of Angel Guard Self-Defence, classes designed by women, for women, trans, and non-binary folk. When I experienced domestic violence, was attacked in the street, and stalked, I realised that I didn't know how to defend myself in real-life unpredictable situations. I’ve spent over 25 years in the security industry, served in the military, worked over a decade in the NHS, and trained in counselling. More importantly, I bring lived experience and deep empathy to everything I teach. I understand what it feels like to be on edge walking home, to carry trauma, and to crave safety without knowing where to find it.
A member of The Clare Project team will also be present.
About the venue:
